Map of Hammerfell
Desert kingdom of the Redguards on the western coast
Where is Hammerfell?
Hammerfell lies on the western edge of Tamriel, south of High Rock across the Iliac Bay. It is the homeland of the Redguards, a people famed for their swordsmanship, whose ancestors arrived by sea from the lost continent of Yokuda.
Geography
Most of the interior is the Alik'r Desert, a vast expanse of dunes and rock. The coasts are greener and hold the major cities: Sentinel on the Iliac Bay, Rihad and Taneth in the south, and Gilane in the far west.
The Dragontail Mountains run along the eastern border with Skyrim and Cyrodiil, and the rugged highlands of Craglorn and Bangkorai lie in the north-east. The island of Stros M'Kai sits off the southern coast.
History
The Ra Gada, the first Yokudan warriors, conquered the region in the First Era after their homeland sank beneath the sea. Redguard society long divided between the Crowns, who keep old Yokudan traditions, and the Forebears, who adapted to life in Tamriel.
In the Fourth Era, Hammerfell rejected the treaty that ended the Great War, fought the Aldmeri Dominion alone and drove it out by 4E 180, then left the Empire as an independent realm.
Hammerfell in the games
Arena includes Hammerfell's cities. The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall (1996) covers its share of the Iliac Bay, and The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard (1998) is set on Stros M'Kai. The Elder Scrolls Online visits the Alik'r Desert, Bangkorai, Craglorn and Stros M'Kai.
